Handbook of Cyanobacteria (Hardcover, New): T. A. Sarma Handbook of Cyanobacteria (Hardcover, New)
T. A. Sarma
R6,472 Discovery Miles 64 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This handbook acquaints readers with the exciting developments in various areas of cyanobacterial research in the backdrop of the publication of complete genome sequence of the cyanobacterium "Synechocystis sp. "strain PCC 6803 in 1996. It begins with a summary of the current knowledge on the taxonomy, phylogeny and evolution of cyanobacteria followed by the sequenced genomes, differentiation of akinetes and heterocyst. The book considers mechanisms of cellular movements (gliding, swimming and twitching motions) exhibited by various cyanobacteria in order to adjust to their environmental niches and the operation of the circadian rhythms. It covers cyanobacterial symbiosis, cyanophages and cyanobacterial toxins, followed by a discussion on stress responses (salinity, temperature, desiccation and oxidation).

A comprehensive account on the developments in all these spheres has been presented in a lucid style with the required background information, molecular techniques employed and models proposed. This handbook constitutes the first such book written by a single author at a level and depth for graduate and research students in botany and microbiology.

The Feed Additive and the Fish (Paperback): Jha Ghanshyam Nath, Qureshi T. A., Sarma Debajit The Feed Additive and the Fish (Paperback)
Jha Ghanshyam Nath, Qureshi T. A., Sarma Debajit
R1,767 Discovery Miles 17 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book entitled "The Feed Additive and The Fish" is an endeavor to evaluate the ameliorative influence of locally available, low cost feed additives on commercially important fishes; to encourage fish culturist to promote use of these additives which might be a rich source of protein, fat and minerals, essential for human health, and to increase income and livelihood from ornamental fish trade (at some extant) by incorporating this type of low cost feed additives. Supplementary feeding plays important role in augmenting aquaculture productivity and its cost is the major operating expenditure. Hence, to reduce reliance on the expensive conventional feed ingredients, less expensive alternative source of quality proteinous ingredient must be explored. Impact on growth, pigmentation and nutrient profile of three fishes fed on diets with five different natural feed additives were experimentally verified and reflected in this book. Significant improvement in growth and protein content with enhanced pigmentation in case of one additive, while only on fish pigmentation in case of other is noticeable.
